Your heart does not tick like a clock. The gap between one beat and the next changes slightly all the time, and this "variability" is a sign of a flexible autonomic nervous system. When we relax, the "rest and digest" side of that system usually becomes more active.
What did reviews find?
A 2020 systematic review of 29 studies on music and heart-rate variability found that most showed a positive effect, with big differences in design and sample size. A recent (2026) meta-analysis of 24 randomised trials found that music was associated with an increase in markers of relaxation-related activity compared with control groups.
Tempo and silence
In a classic study, breathing and heart rate sped up with fast music and slowed with slow music. Strikingly, short pauses of silence between pieces brought the most relaxation. That is why we leave space to breathe in our tracks.
Important limits
These are physiological markers, not a diagnosis or treatment. If you use a smartwatch that measures HRV, its readings are approximate and affected by movement, sleep and coffee.
Try it yourself
- Sit comfortably and listen to slow music for ten minutes.
- Make your out-breath longer than your in-breath.
- Notice how you feel before and after, rather than fixating on numbers.
