Tempo and the iso-principle: why your track starts where you are

When you're tense, very slow music can make you feel worse, as if someone were telling you to “calm down!” That's why musicians use an old idea called the iso-principle.

What is the iso-principle?

Music starts by matching the listener's state (tempo and mood), then changes gradually toward the desired state. It is widely described in music practice, including a 2015 published case study on its use in mood management. That is a single case study, not a large trial, but it shows the logic.

Tempo and the body

In a study in the journal Heart, musicians and non-musicians listened to different styles. Faster music went with faster breathing, higher heart rate and blood pressure; slower music, and especially pauses of silence between tracks, went with lower values. Strikingly, the short silences were more relaxing than the slow music itself.

In a BMJ study, slow rhythmic recitation synchronised breathing to about 6 breaths per minute, a rhythm linked with favourable changes in heart and circulation rhythms.

How we use it

  • Your track begins at a tempo close to how you feel now, then slows (or lifts gently) toward your goal.
  • If your breathing gets fast under stress, we use long phrases the length of a calm breath.
  • We leave space for stillness, because silence is part of the music.
