Practical guide

Before words there was music: a mother's lullaby, a wedding song, the rhythm of a majlis. In every culture people gather around sound to say what is hard to say, and to feel that they are together.

Expression without words

Instrumental music leaves wide open space: it doesn't impose a meaning, it invites you to bring your own feeling to it. Sometimes humming, tapping a rhythm, or choosing a faster or slower melody is enough to express how you are. In Ruwaydan sessions we always begin by asking: which sound feels like you right now? Which sound feels like home?

Connection: breathing to the same rhythm

When a group claps to one rhythm or repeats a short melody together, the pace of the room comes together and the space settles. Arabic and Gulf music has a beautiful tradition for this: call and response, one voice sings and the others answer. Every voice has a place in it, however simple.

Why the oud?

  • A warm, close sound that fills the room without overpowering it.
  • Live playing that follows the people present: it starts at their pace and slows gradually, following the iso-principle.
  • Familiar maqams for Arab ears, and a sound that sparks curiosity in those hearing it for the first time. Read about maqam and mood.

A simple practice for families and groups

  1. Choose a song everyone knows.
  2. One person starts a slow rhythm by clapping or tapping on the table.
  3. Everyone else joins by humming, clapping or singing, each in their own way.
  4. Slow the rhythm gradually until it stops.
  5. Close with a minute of silence, then each person shares one word for how they feel.
