Pregnancy and the first months of motherhood are full of joy, and of worry too. Music is one of the simplest things mothers turn to naturally.
During pregnancy and labour
A 2024 systematic review gathered 33 randomised trials on music and anxiety in pregnant women, in settings from routine check-ups to caesarean sections. Most results favoured music for lowering anxiety. A meta-analysis focused on labour found that music was associated with lower anxiety during labour compared with usual care.
After birth
A recent (2025) review of studies with mothers of healthy newborns found that mothers described music, whether listening or singing to their babies, as a moment of relaxation and connection with the baby and with themselves. The evidence is mostly descriptive, but it is honest and reassuring.
An honest note
Study quality varies, and music does not replace antenatal care or asking for help. If you feel persistent sadness or anxiety after birth, please talk to your doctor; it is common and there is specialist support.
Gentle ideas
- Give yourself ten minutes a day with calm instrumental music and slow breathing.
- Keep the volume low; a small speaker is kinder than in-ear headphones for long periods.
- Singing to your baby, even softly, is a lovely connection that needs no talent.
We make calm instrumental tracks for mothers, with no drums, for the quiet of the night or feeding time.
