We all know it from experience: one song calms us, another sets us on edge. But what does research say?
The big picture
A 2020 systematic review with two meta-analyses pooled 104 randomised controlled trials (about 9,600 participants) of music interventions and stress-related outcomes. It found small-to-moderate effects in favour of music, on both physical markers (such as heart rate, blood pressure and cortisol) and how stressed people felt.
In one specific setting, a Cochrane review found that listening to music before surgery was associated with lower anxiety than standard care.
It's not that simple
In a well-known lab experiment, people listened to relaxing music before a stressful task. The music didn't simply lower every stress marker; some changed and others didn't. The lesson: music is not a magic switch, and its effect depends on the type of music, the timing and the listener's taste.
What seems to matter
- Personal choice: music you like and know often soothes more than “relaxing” music that doesn't feel like you.
- Tempo: slower, quieter music goes with calmer breathing (see our article on tempo).
- Attentive listening: giving music a moment of its own, not making it background to more noise.
How Ruwaydan uses this
That's why we ask about your favourite instruments, the sounds that bother you and how you feel right now, and make a track for you. We don't promise treatment; we offer a carefully designed moment of calm.
