Work pressure is one of the most common sources of stress. Can music be part of employee wellbeing programmes?
What did research find?
A 2023 systematic review looked at music trials with healthcare workers under real working stress. Most outcomes, from stress and anxiety to burnout risk, improved in the music groups, with a lot of variety in study design. Notably, the only study comparing approaches favoured playlists tailored to the person.
In a small randomised trial, healthcare staff listened to 30 minutes of music a day for three weeks. Stress scores trended better in the music groups and wellbeing fell in the control group, but the results did not reach statistical significance. In Denmark, Guided Imagery and Music, a programme led by trained therapists, was studied with employees on sick leave because of work stress.
More broadly, a large 2020 meta-analysis shows that music is associated with small-to-moderate reductions in stress markers.
Practical ideas for companies
- A small quiet room with a comfortable chair and headphones, for a ten-minute break.
- Short group listening sessions, or a live oud session during wellbeing week.
- Personal tracks for employees, after a short, confidential questionnaire.
- A simple measure: relaxation rated from 0 to 10 before and after.
