Pain is not only a physical signal; it is an experience shaped by attention, mood and expectation. That is why research has looked at music as a companion to pain.
What did research find?
The Lancet review (2015) found that music around surgery was linked with less pain and less need for pain medication. For chronic pain, a recent (2025) meta-analysis of nine randomised trials found lower chronic pain intensity and lower depression in music groups, with no clear improvement in anxiety or quality of life.
Why might it help?
A review in the journal Pain describes several likely mechanisms: drawing attention away from pain, improving mood and a sense of control, pleasure and reward in the brain, and familiarity: music people choose themselves seems to have more effect.
To be clear
Ruwaydan does not treat or diagnose pain. If you are in pain, your doctor comes first. Music may make the moment feel lighter, and that is all we promise.
Getting the most from it
- Choose music you genuinely like; personal choice matters.
- Listen attentively, lying back, with slow breathing.
- Try 20 to 30 minutes and notice how you feel before and after.
